The success of our Hug in a Box Scheme
new ways to support those living with dementia and their family/carers. East Belfast Community Development Agency, one of the many organisations involved in the campaign, came up with the idea of the Hug in a Box scheme. With numerous people living with dementia now stuck indoors as well as many carers having to take time away from work to care for family members full time, we wanted to create something which benefited both parties and bring a little bit of happiness during a very challenging time.
Each box contained a range of activities such as vintage dominoes sets, image cards, playing cards, craft packs, model building sets, resources to make bird houses, word searches and gardening packs. Boxes also contained a range of information for the carer such as support groups, dementia walks, our unique What’s On Guide, information on the Dementia Navigator service as well as some chocolate and sweets to enjoy together. These were available to any family living with dementia in East Belfast. Throughout July and August we were able to hand deliver 50 boxes directly to the persons front door.
Our main aim was to ensure no family living with dementia in East Belfast felt alone or that there was no current support available to help them through this time. We hope to offer a similar scheme soon with a theme of reminiscing and memories. If you have any further questions on our Hug in a Boxes please email davina@ebcda.org
